Colour the Skies Above Your Event!

Kite Event Planning

Kites bring colour, energy, and a sense of wonder to any gathering but a little planning goes a long way toward making them a safe and memorable highlight of your event. Here are some key points to consider.

Planning Guide

Adding kites to a festival instantly transforms the atmosphere, filling the sky with colour, movement, and a sense of playfulness that appeals to all ages. Kite flying offers an inclusive, low-cost activity that draws people in as both spectators and participants, encouraging families to linger, interact, and enjoy the day. From gentle diamond kites drifting on the breeze to spectacular stunt displays and giant inflatables, kites create a visual spectacle that can be seen from far beyond the festival grounds, a natural beacon that says, something exciting is happening here.

1. Location & Space
  • Choose a large, open area free from trees, buildings, and power lines.

  • Make sure there’s enough distance between kite flyers and other event activities to prevent tangles or collisions.

  • Consider wind direction and where spectators will stand for the best view.

2. Wind & Weather
  • Ideal kite-flying winds are 10–25 km/h — too light and kites won’t fly, too strong and they may be hard to control.

  • Have a backup plan if the weather is too calm or too windy.

  • Provide shaded areas and water stations for sunny days.

Public Liability Insurance
  • Public liability insurance is vital for kite events, as it protects organisers and participants if accidents or damage occur. It gives peace of mind to councils, sponsors, and the public that the event is safe and well managed.

3. Safety & Rules
  • Designate a kite flying zone and clearly mark it with flags or signs.

  • Keep flying areas well clear of roads, car parks, trees, and power lines.

  • Prohibit abrasive lines (glass-coated, metallic) for safety.

  • Have volunteers or marshals on hand to monitor and assist.

  • Public Liability
4. Activities & Engagement
  • Offer kite-making workshops for children and families.

  • Include demonstrations of stunt kites, power kites, or large inflatables.

  • Encourage participants to bring their own kites while also offering some loaners.

5. Partnership & Promotion
  • Work with the Australian Kiteflyers Society for expertise and resources.

  • Promote the kite activities in your event advertising colourful visuals always draw a crowd.

  • Consider inviting kite-related businesses for stalls or sponsorship.

6. Enviromental Care
  • Ensure all kite debris and broken lines are collected and disposed of properly.

  • Avoid disturbing nearby wildlife or sensitive areas.

  • Encourage reusable materials for kite-making activities.
