Painting Washi

Painting Washi

Decorate your kite using either traditional, modern or your own style. Cover your work area with old newspapers. Firstly paint the black outline of your design using Indian ink or the like. This ink if spilt will stain. To paint the coloured areas use a water based dye or food coloring etc Wait until the black dries than fill in areas of colour. Do take your time and wait for the black to dry. Don't paint on wet areas unless you want a blurred effect. After painting hang the kite skin up to dry. Beware washi is a very absorbent medium. A calligraphy brush achieves excellent traditional effects. However a variety of brush sizes will allow you to achieve similar results.
